Construite en 1932 par Pierre Leprince-Ringuet, l'école ne permettait plus d'accueillir l'ensemble des effectifs. En janvier 1956, suite à un rapport de l'inspection de l'enseignement primaire, la commune décide la construction d'une extension pour l'école des filles, située rue Cuvier. La commune confie l'opération à E. Gaillard qui sollicite le peintre Auguste Herbin afin d'agrémenter le nouveau bâtiment de ses oeuvres. Les travaux d'extension de l'école se déroulent de février à octobre 1957. Le 2 janvier 1958, le dessin d'Herbin est soumis à l'inspecteur de l'académie pour la mosaïque de la façade, une grande composition abstraite conçue sur le mot Orphée. Le 1er juillet 1957, Auguste Herbin envoie les photographies des maquettes achevées à l'architecte. Le vitrail est réalisé par Henri Lhotellier, maître-verrier à calais et posé le 27 août 1958. Il est l'unique vitrail d'Auguste Herbin.

History
Built in 1932 by Pierre Leprince-Ringuet, the school could no longer accommodate all the pupils. In January 1956, following a report from the primary education inspection, the commune decided to construct an extension for the girls' school, located on rue Cuvier. The commune entrusted the operation to E. Gaillard who solicited the painter Auguste Herbin to embellish the new building with his works. The school extension works took place from February to October 1957. On 2 January 1958, Herbin's design was submitted to the academy inspector for the façade mosaic, a large abstract composition conceived on the word Orphée. On 1 July 1957, Auguste Herbin sent photographs of the completed models to the architect. The stained glass was made by Henri Lhotellier, master glazier at Calais and installed on 27 August 1958. It is the unique stained glass window by Auguste Herbin.
