Historique
Description

History
At the end of the First World War, nine communes of the Meuse in the red zone of the Verdun battlefield are declared "dead for France": Beaumont-en-Verdunois, Bezonvaux, Cumières-le-Mort-Homme, Douaumont, Fleury-devant-Douaumont, Haumont-près-Samogneux, Louvemont-Côte-du-Poivre, Ornes and Vaux-devant-Damloup. The ravages are such that it is decided not to rebuild these villages. However, quite uniquely, these latter retain their administrative existence as a memorial. Witnesses to the violence of the conflict, nine commemorative chapels are erected between 1930 and 1934 in order to perpetuate, besides the victims of the war, the memory of each of these disappeared villages. War damage grants made the financing of these constructions possible.
Description
The chapel is erected on the site of the old parish church. It is surrounded by the enclosure wall of the cemetery rebuilt from 1929 onwards. With regard to the corpus studied, the chapel of Louvemont is distinguished by its centred plan in the form of a cross with octagonal dome. The arms of the cross have little projection, except for the west arm flanked by an apse. The architect draws inspiration from the model of neoclassical funeral chapels while geometricising the whole, in a taste consistent with the Art Deco sensibility of the period.
