History
In 1886, a subscription was opened to erect a monument to Jean-François Millet. The project was entrusted to Henri Chapu, then to Jean-Ernest Bouteiller after Chapu's death. To the bust which he redesigned, he added an allegorical group representing a peasant woman, a familiar figure from Millet's paintings, holding her child in her arms who offers wildflowers to the painter. The pedestal presents a still life behind the bust, rocks from Gréville at the base. The monument combines marble for the bust, bronze for the group and granite for the pedestal.
