History
In 1854 a competition was organised to erect an equestrian statue of Napoleon 1st. In 1855, Armand Le Véel was selected. The statue was completed in 1857. The sculptor created a statue adapted to the history of the place, representing Napoleon 1st contemplating the works of the roadstead and the dyke, which he had relaunched in 1803 and inspected in 1811. The symbolic scope of the monument was diminished in the 1930s with the development of the green beach which severed the link between the statue and the roadstead.
