En mars 1844, une souscription est ouverte pour ériger un monument à la mémoire d'Armand de Briqueville, colonel napoléonien. David d'Angers modela un buste, fit procéder à la fonte et le remit au comité en octobre 1845. Le buste en Hermès colossal s'élevait sur un piédestal de granit dessiné par l'architecte Lemelle. Deux des faces du piédestal comportaient un relief symbolisant la carrière militaire (un sabre) et politique (une tribune de l'assemblée) de Briqueville. Ces reliefs furent envoyés à la fonte sous l'Occupation. Ce portrait privilégiant l'aspect moral du sujet range l'oeuvre dans le courant romantique, peu représenté en Basse-Normandie.

History
In March 1844, a subscription was opened to erect a monument to the memory of Armand de Briqueville, Napoleonic colonel. David d'Angers modelled a bust, had it cast and handed it over to the committee in October 1845. The colossal Hermès bust rose above a granite pedestal designed by architect Lemelle. Two faces of the pedestal bore reliefs symbolising Briqueville's military (a sabre) and political (an assembly tribune) career. These reliefs were sent for casting under the Occupation. This portrait, privileging the moral aspect of the subject, places the work within the Romantic movement, little represented in Lower Normandy.
