La chapelle et la tour des remparts qui la jouxte constituent les vestiges des anciennes fortifications de Mende, détruites à la fin du 18ème siècle. La chapelle fut construite en 1657 par les Pénitents Blancs qui s'approprièrent l'ancienne tour pour servir de logement au sacristain. Un mur-clocher fut bâti sur la tour en 1724. La chapelle n'est pas orientée, son plan est rectangulaire avec, à l'est, une grande chapelle dite choeur des pénitents. A l'intérieur, le maître-autel est encore en place, scandé par quatre colonnes torsadées. Cette chapelle, modeste construction, constitue un témoin important de l'histoire religieuse de la ville.

History
The chapel and the remparts tower which adjoins it constitute the vestiges of the old fortifications of Mende, destroyed at the end of the 18th century. The chapel was built in 1657 by the White Penitents who appropriated the old tower to serve as lodging for the sacristan. A bell-tower wall was built on the tower in 1724. The chapel is not oriented, its plan is rectangular with, to the east, a large chapel known as the choir of the penitents. Inside, the high altar is still in place, punctuated by four twisted columns. This chapel, modest construction, constitutes an important witness to the religious history of the city.
