La tour faisait partie des anciennes fortifications de Mende. Edifiée en 1161 par l'évêque Aldebert, elle est connue jusqu'en 1655 sous le nom de grande tour d'Auriac. En 1593, elle est restaurée par le gouverneur de Mende, Montmorency Fosseuse. Au 17e siècle, une chapelle est édifiée pour la confrérie des Pénitents Blancs et la tour servit de clocher, d'où son nouveau nom. L'ouvrage se présente sous forme de tour circulaire à méplat dans la partie nord-ouest, avec arcature aveugle et clocheton au sommet.

History
The tower was part of the old fortifications of Mende. Built in 1161 by the bishop Aldebert, it is known until 1655 under the name of great tower of Auriac. In 1593, it is restored by the governor of Mende, Montmorency Fosseuse. In the 17th century, a chapel is built for the confraternity of the White Penitents and the tower served as a bell tower, hence its new name. The work presents itself as a circular tower with a flat section in the north-west part, with blind arcading and a small bell turret at the summit.
