Description

Description
The presence of a blast furnace at Blanquefort-sur-Briolance should be related to the iron-working activity whose presence in the Lémance valley dates back to the Middle Ages. This activity was able to develop due to the presence of metal deposits and waterways conducive to trade, but because of the isolation of this territory, its development remained less than that of the forges of Périgord. Mentioned from 1676 onwards, the forge of Blanquefort-sur-Briolance appears to be of medium size compared to others in the Lémance valley. It was not until 1837 that a blast furnace was built there, leading to the transformation of the buildings on the property. The 1850s constituted the heyday of the small forges of the Lémance valley but from the 1860s onwards, these industries were in crisis, the dominant model being that of large establishments such as at Fumel. The forge of Blanquefort-sur-Briolance ceased operations in 1871. It became a lime factory from 1872 to 1882, a wheat mill and a lemonade factory from 1923 to the 1980s. The evolution of its activity caused numerous modifications within the site of Blanquefort-sur-Briolance, of which nonetheless remains its massive blast furnace, erected in 1837. This blast furnace, in rubble stone with corner bondstones, has against it a vast canopy currently crossed by a concrete slab dividing it into two levels. Inside, the blast furnace retains the arcades that previously housed its bellows, as well as a hydraulic installation connected to a neighbouring pond. Equipment intended for lemonade manufacture is also still in place. Several buildings are attached to the blast furnace: a master ironworker's house, consisting of two wings and enlarged in the 1920s, as well as a workshop. The neighbouring pond, whose water was used to operate the blast furnace bellows, still has three sluice gates.
