Historique
Le monument funéraire de Pierre-François Chappotin (1728-1800) se présente comme un édifice complexe et imposant, composé d'un ensemble de tombes prenant place dans une enceinte. Une sorte d'autel à l'antique, orné d'éléments décoratifs aux angles, se dresse en avant du monument. Une stèle surmontée d'une croix couronne l'autel. Des plaques de marbre portent le nom de Chappotin et de son épouse. De chaque côté de ce monument, deux tombes plus modernes sont disposées. A l'arrière, deux constructions s'élèvent, destinées à accueillir des cercueils mais dépourvues d'inscriptions ou de plaques. Une colonne brisée est érigée entre ces deux caveaux portant l'écusson de Hongrie ainsi qu'une croix de Malte. Chappotin, moine défroqué, dirigea le collège qui succéda au collège royal militaire, à partir de 1790. Il quitta Pontlevoy en 1824 après avoir acquis une concession au cimetière de la commune où il fut rapatrié à sa mort. Cet ensemble de tombes, dont l'ordonnateur n'est autre que l'exécuteur testamentaire de Chappotin, un dénommé Sarrut, est représentatif d'un goût de l'antique caractéristique de la période et témoigne également de l'histoire de l'abbaye. Les motifs décoratifs à l'antique (acrotères, lampes à huile..) dénote un style dépouillé, voire néo-classique.

The funeral monument of Pierre-François Chappotin (1728-1800) presents itself as a complex and imposing building, composed of a group of tombs taking place within an enclosure. A sort of ancient-style altar, decorated with decorative elements at the angles, stands in front of the monument. A stele topped with a cross crowns the altar. Marble plaques bear the name of Chappotin and his wife. On each side of this monument, two more modern tombs are arranged. At the rear, two constructions stand, intended to accommodate coffins but devoid of inscriptions or plaques. A broken column is erected between these two vaults bearing the coat of arms of Hungary as well as a Maltese cross. Chappotin, an unfrocked monk, directed the college which succeeded the royal military college, from 1790. He left Pontlevoy in 1824 after acquiring a burial plot in the cemetery of the commune where he was repatriated upon his death. This group of tombs, whose initiator is none other than the executor of Chappotin's will, one named Sarrut, is representative of a taste for antiquity characteristic of the period and also bears witness to the history of the abbey. The decorative motifs in the antique style (acroteria, oil lamps...) denote a austere style, even neo-classical.
