The first mention indicates a church under the dedication of the Virgin and then of Saint Peter. The present church took the dedication of Saint John the Baptist at a late date, in the 13th century. Analysis of the preserved archives and of the building allows several phases of work and construction to be identified. The first concerns the choir of square plan and rib vault, of Angevin Gothic style. The choir with flat chevet is reinforced externally by buttresses. A second phase concerns the rectangular nave covered with rafter roof structure bearing trusses and furnished with a coffered vault. A third phase of work seems to take shape at the beginning of the 16th century with the creation of an additional bay of nave and the addition to the north of a seigneurial chapel or for baptismal purposes. With this important phase of 16th-century work must be associated the portal and the opening which surmounts it. The last phase of construction proves to be of the 19th century with the creation of a chapel against the south wall which takes up the most striking elements of the Renaissance portal. Its neo-Romanesque or neo-classical vein draws its direct inspiration from models of Antiquity or classical Renaissance.
