Une fouille archéologique préventive est en cours depuis 2014 en plein centre de Béziers à l'emplacement de l'îlot dit des Chaudronniers dont les habitations vétustes ont toutes été rasées. Un diagnostic avait préalablement relevé des niveaux protohistoriques, des maçonneries antiques et des aménagements médiévaux de type silos. La fouille, prescrite par le service régional de l'archéologie, a permis de dégager, dans la partie sud de la parcelle, d'importantes maçonneries constituées d'un petit appareil parfois interrompu par de gros blocs de pierre de taille remarquablement équarris, d'environ deux mètres d'épaisseur. A Béziers, l'amphithéâtre est déjà localisé et protégé au titre des Monuments historiques. Le nouveau bâtiment découvert peut être un théâtre.

History
A preventive archaeological excavation has been underway since 2014 in the centre of Béziers at the site of the block known as the Chaudronniers, whose dilapidated buildings have all been demolished.
