Historique
Aqueduc de Vauban, construit par D. Gillade de 1687 à 1689. Traces de reconstruction partielle au 18e siècle. La tête d'entrée est remarquable par son plan inhabituel sur les ouvrages du Canal, ainsi que par la qualité de sa construction, mais elle semble avoir été remaniée dans des proportions qu'il est pour le moment difficile de définir. Celle de sortie est plus surement proche de son volume d'origine, et elle comporte encore des traces de mortier à la pouzzolane qui semblent remonter à sa construction. Les deux têtes ont été maltraitées par des aménagements récents. L'environnement de l'ouvrage est aussi remarquable par la présence à l'aval de l'écluse double de Castanet, avec en rive droite l'ancienne maison éclusière (début 19e siècle) dont le sous-sol est occupé en partie par une écurie, et sur l'autre rive, soubassement d'un ancien moulin. Mais le site a souffert des travaux d'allongement en 1978.

History
Vauban aqueduct, built by D. Gillade from 1687 to 1689. Traces of partial reconstruction in the 18th century. The intake head is remarkable for its unusual plan on the Canal works, as well as for the quality of its construction, but it appears to have been remodelled to extents which are for the present difficult to define. The outlet head is more surely close to its original volume, and it still bears traces of mortar with pozzolana which appear to date from its construction. Both heads have been damaged by recent works. The environment of the structure is also remarkable for the presence downstream of the double lock of Castanet, with on the right bank the former lock-keeper's house (early 19th century) whose basement is partially occupied by a stable, and on the other bank, the plinth of a former mill. But the site suffered from the lengthening works in 1978.
