Historique

History
Collection of bamboos constituted by the botanist Eugène Mazel from 1855 and enriched since 1906 by the Nègre family. The collections assembled by Mazel included notably bamboos originating from India and China, but also cedars of Lebanon and the Atlas, essences from Japan, California... An irrigation network enlarged and created by Eugène Mazel in 1865, ensures the water supplies necessary for the bamboos. A water intake from the Gardon, upstream, makes it possible to supply the main canal. The water is returned further downstream, to the river, by natural and artificial outlets distributed on the left bank. The industrial canals made it possible, in the eastern part of the site, to supply factories, mills and magnaneries.
