La ville d'Aubais comptait déjà un premier château-fort au 13ème siècle. Sa tour ronde d'angle fut intégrée dans la composition lors de la reconstruction de l'édifice entre 1680 et 1685. A partir de cette date, la poursuite des travaux fut assurée par un architecte de Nîmes d'après les plans d'un ingénieur du roi. L'exceptionnel escalier monumental est son uvre. Occupant tout un pavillon, son ampleur ainsi que le soin apporté à sa réalisation ont suscité les louanges de ses contemporains, notamment de Vauban lui-même. Le château présente une architecture extérieure austère et monumentale, sans fioritures, au contraire de sa partie centrale plus richement travaillée comme en témoignent les motifs d'inspiration gallo-romaine.££Le château offre un accès direct, à l'est, sur la place du village, anciennement cour d'honneur. La distribution intérieure était entièrement structurée à partir de l'escalier haut de 25 mètres, en arcs dont les volées convergent autour d'une seule volée centrale. Le palier du haut est porté par une voûte plate. La partie supérieure est décorée de niches finement ouvragées et le départ de l'escalier est sculpté. Le pavillon, autrefois surmonté d'un dôme, affirme sa domination sur les bâtiments qui l'entourent.

History
The town of Aubais already had a first castle-fort in the 13th century. Its round corner tower was integrated into the composition during the rebuilding of the edifice between 1680 and 1685. From that date onwards, the continuation of the works was carried out by an architect from Nîmes according to the plans of a king's engineer. The exceptional monumental staircase is his work. Occupying an entire pavilion, its scale as well as the care taken in its execution drew praise from his contemporaries, notably from Vauban himself. The castle presents an austere and monumental external architecture, without embellishment, in contrast to its central part more richly worked as evidenced by motifs of Gallo-Roman inspiration. The castle offers direct access, to the east, onto the village square, formerly the courtyard of honour. The internal distribution was entirely structured around the staircase, 25 metres high, in arches whose flights converge around a single central flight. The upper landing is borne by a flat vault. The upper part is decorated with finely wrought niches and the departure of the staircase is sculpted. The pavilion, formerly crowned with a dome, asserts its dominance over the buildings surrounding it.
