L'îlot fortifié des Capucins est situé sur la côte ouest de la presqu'île de Roscanvel, au sud de la batterie de Cornouaille. Dans cette partie la plus large de l'entrée du goulet de Brest, Vauban avait prévu en 1694-1696 la construction de deux batteries : celle du fort du Minou sur la rive nord et celle des Capucins sur la rive sud. Il ne reste rien sur l'îlot des Capucins de ces projets, mais ils furent repris et exécutés, en suivant les plans de Vauban, en 1847-1849. Depuis, le site a évolué et s'est adapté à la modernisation des armements au XIXe siècle . Plusieurs batteries de mortiers, elles-mêmes remaniées, ont remplacé la batterie de gros calibre restée active jusque vers 1870. En 1888, une batterie de rupture sous roc est construite, ainsi qu'un magasin à poudre en 1890-1891, puis un système de projecteurs alimentés à l'électricité en 1891-1893. L'ensemble a été très fortement ruiné par les bombardements de la seconde guerre mondiale.

History
The fortified islet of the Capucins is situated on the west coast of the Roscanvel peninsula, south of the Cornouaille battery. In this widest part of the entrance to the Brest narrows, Vauban had planned in 1694-1696 the construction of two batteries: that of the fort of Minou on the north bank and that of the Capucins on the south bank. Nothing remains on the islet of the Capucins of these projects, but they were taken up and executed, following Vauban's plans, in 1847-1849. Since then, the site has evolved and adapted to the modernization of armaments in the 19th century. Several mortar batteries, themselves modified, replaced the heavy-calibre battery which remained active until around 1870. In 1888, a counter-bombardment battery under rock is constructed, as well as a powder magazine in 1890-1891, then a system of projectors supplied by electricity in 1891-1893. The whole was very heavily ruined by the bombardments of the Second World War.
