Ce fort est un ouvrage de défense côtière dont la construction fut décidée par Vauban, en 1683. Il assurait le verrouillage du goulet de Brest avec la batterie de Cornouaille établie, à la même époque, sur la rive opposée du détroit, ces deux ouvrages complémentaires croisant leurs feux. Formé de deux batteries, haute et basse, reliées entre elles par des courtines, cet édifice témoigne du savoir-faire de Vauban et illustre ladaptation de ce type douvrage aux évolutions de larmement et de la construction navale jusquà la seconde guerre mondiale.

History
This fort is a coastal defence structure whose construction was decided by Vauban in 1683.
