Mis en service en 1835, ce phare est l'un des tous premiers établissements de signalisation construits dans le cadre du premier réseau d'éclairage des côtes françaises mis en place au début du 19e siècle. Il s'inscrit dans la continuité de divers feux établis successivement depuis le 15e siècle sur l'abbaye de Saint-Mathieu. L'ouvrage tronconique sur base circulaire, a conservé sa distribution d'origine. Sa construction a utilisé, en partie, les pierres de l'église abbatiale de l'abbaye.

History
Put into service in 1835, this lighthouse is one of the very first signalling installations built within the framework of the first network for lighting French coasts established at the beginning of the 19th century. It is in continuity with various beacons established successively since the 15th century on the abbey of Saint-Mathieu. The truncated cone structure on a circular base has retained its original distribution. Its construction used, in part, stones from the abbey church of the abbey.
