Charcoal production dates back to the Middle Ages. The first concessions date from 1777. In 1863, two concessions merge to create the SA of the Ahun Collieries. In the 19th and 20th centuries, exploitation develops and modernizes. Around 1870-1872, the collieries possess sixty coke ovens, two coal washeries, laboratories... At the same time, they construct workers' housing and equip themselves with common installations (schools). A decline begins at the start of the 20th century. Coal extraction stops in the thirties and production ceases definitively in 1960.
