Historique
Située au milieu de la place Blair, à côté de l'hôtel Monconseil (siège du Directoire pendant la Révolution française), la colonne de la liberté de Saintes a été érigée pendant la première quinzaine de juillet 1791 sous la conduite de l'ingénieur Noiron et de l'entrepreneur Emeri. Dans les fondations, sont placés le 8 juillet, une bouteille contenant les droits de l'homme et du citoyen et une dédicace à la Liberté. La colonne est inaugurée dans la liesse le 14 juillet 1791.
Description
La colonne se compose d'un soubassement carré à base et corniche moulurées, d'une colonne lisse à base et chapiteau dorique et d'un faisceau de licteur trapu surmonté d'une armature métallique qui portait à l'origine un bonnet phrygien, remplacé par un drapeau- girouette en métal vers 1830. Les pierres, blocs calcaires de grande taille, proviennent des vestiges gallo-romains trouvés à proximité.

History
Located in the middle of place Blair, next to the Monconseil hotel (seat of the Directory during the French Revolution), the column of liberty of Saintes was erected during the first fortnight of July 1791 under the direction of engineer Noiron and contractor Emeri. In the foundations, were placed on 8 July, a bottle containing the rights of man and of the citizen and a dedication to Liberty. The column was inaugurated in jubilation on 14 July 1791.
Description
The column consists of a square base with moulded base and cornice, a smooth column with Doric base and capital and a squat bundle of lictors topped with a metal frame that originally bore a Phrygian cap, replaced by a metal flag-weathervane around 1830. The stones, large blocks of limestone, come from Gallo-Roman remains found nearby.
