La construction fut établie sur l'une des parcelles libérées lors des premiers travaux d'aménagement urbain et de démolition des anciens remparts, en 1738. La façade d'apparat donne sur les quais nouvellement créés, le fleuve et la campagne. Le décor se résume en bas-reliefs et consoles au balcon pour le style rocaille à la mode. A l'intérieur, le grand escalier en pierre avec sa balustrade en fer forgé est l'un des plus beaux éléments architecturaux. Les autres aménagements sont issus de remplois (plafonds peints des châteaux de Romegoux et de la Forêt ; lambris du château de Tonnay-Charente). Cet édifice est le seul exemple d'architecture représentative du goût officiel de la première moitié du 18e siècle en Saintonge.

History
The building was established on one of the parcels cleared during the initial urban development works and demolition of the old ramparts, in 1738. The main façade overlooks the newly created quays, the river and the countryside. The decoration is limited to bas-reliefs and consoles on the balcony in the fashionable rococo style. Inside, the great stone staircase with its wrought-iron balustrade is one of the finest architectural elements. The other fittings come from reused elements (painted ceilings from the châteaux of Romegoux and de la Forêt; wainscoting from the château of Tonnay-Charente). This building is the only example of architecture representative of official taste of the first half of the 18th century in Saintonge.
