Historique
La Maison du Roi, devenue préfecture maritime ou hôtel de la Marine a connu construction et aménagements successifs de 1671 à nos jours. C'est la création du port militaire de Rochefort en 1666 qui a motivé la construction d'un hôtel pour l'intendant du port. L'intendant a occupé l'hôtel de 1671 à 1781, date à laquelle il a été remplacé par le commandant de la marine puis le préfet maritime en 1800 puis à nouveau un commandant de la marine en 1927. Devenue propriété de la commune en 2002, le bâtiment est cédé sous la forme d'un bail emphytéotique, au siège de l'état-major du commandement des écoles de la gendarmerie nationale (CEGN) depuis 2004. Le bâtiment s'insère dans l'arsenal. Il constituait un ensemble avec le jardin public actuel, qui était avec ses parterres et charmilles, le parc de la maison de l'Intendant. De ce côté, deux grilles 18e (l'une datée 1773) en fer forgé ferment l'accès à l'arsenal et à la cour des communs. Les bâtiments forment un U aux bras très allongés, ouvert sur la ville, à l'Ouest, par une porte monumentale édifiée vers 1720 et déplacée de quelques mètres en 1897 par souci de symétrie. Ce portail, fermé par une grille en fer forgé est orné de bossage en table, d'une corniche à modillon et d'un amortissement sculpté (deux angelots encadrant un blason bûché, sur fond de drapeaux). Les longues ailes latérales en pierre de taille, avec leurs façades classiques parfaitement symétriques et leur modénature riche (bossage continu au premier niveau, panneaux en table à l'étage, balustrade sommitale) datent de la reconstruction de 1895-97. L'hôtel fin 17e-début 18e siècle, intégré à ce grand programme, présente des façades plus sobres (encadrement de baie à fasces et crossette, légers panneaux en table). Il abrite au rez-de-chaussée, le cabinet de l'amiral, la salle du conseil avec leur boiseries Louis XV (classées OM) et le grand escalier à décor de faux marbre (1895) ; à l'étage, la grande galerie à colonnes dite de Bégon (1701 couverte en 1788 et vitrée en 1815), les salons d'apparat (très restaurés depuis 1895), la chambre de Napoléon (mobilier restitué après 1895). L'hôtel de la Marine est, dans ses parties anciennes, l'une des premières constructions de l'arsenal de Rochefort et sa fonction de lieu de commandement n'a jamais variée. Le programme soigné de 1895, dans le respect du style classique lui a donné une grande monumentalité.
