Slipway built by the Germans in 1942-1943, and incorporated into a major facility that includes the submarine base at La Pallice. The mechanism comes from a Dutch port. After the war, it was used for the maintenance of trawlers of 500 tonnes maximum. In 1959, the mechanisms located on the ramp (the slipway cradle) were replaced, modernised and supplemented. The slipway comprises a reinforced concrete ramp, made up of small steps, with an estimated slope of 5°, approximately 15m wide and about 200m long, of which 120m is underwater. This inclined plane is equipped with four rails, a central rack and wooden rollers. It receives two riveted I-beam carriages, hoisted by means of two steel cables, each connected to an enormous electric motor winch. The lateral slipway cradle has a reinforced concrete structure with successive steps, in which seven horizontal rails and cable return pulleys are embedded. The La Rochelle slipway is a representative example of this type of careening machinery, which has been built in the major ports of France and the world since the end of the 19th century. It has retained all its equipment (except the crane) from the years 1942-1943 and 1959.
