Les plans de la gare sont établis en 1909 par l'architecte Pierre-Joseph Esquié, prix de Rome en 1882. Sa construction débute en 1910 mais, interrompue par la guerre, n'est achevée qu'en 1922. La charpente métallique du bâtiment principal, du hall couvrant les voies et des marquises en façade est réalisée par l'entreprise Ménard et Gourdon de Nantes. Le décor sculpté de la gare s'inspire de la faune maritime. Le hall des voyageurs est orné de mosaïques exécutées par A. Biret sur des cartons du peintre G. Godefroy (actuellement occultées).

The plans for the station are drawn up in 1909 by the architect Pierre-Joseph Esquié, Prix de Rome in 1882. Its construction begins in 1910 but, interrupted by the war, is only completed in 1922.
