Historique
Depuis la construction de la tour de la Lanterne au 15e siècle, La Rochelle ne disposait que d'un seul fanal placé près de cette tour et signalant les rochers de Lavardin et de Chauveau. A la demande des pilotes du port, un projet concernant la construction de deux nouveaux feux à la tête de la jetée est évoqué à partir de 1842. Les premiers plans sont dressés en 1848. Les travaux se déroulent de 1850 à 1853. Deux phares d'alignement à 59° sont construits. Le phare postérieur, sur le quai Valin, abrite son allumage dans une tour octogonale peinte en blanc avec partie supérieure en vert, accolée à la face ouest d'une maison en maçonnerie à deux niveaux. D'une hauteur au-dessus de la mer de 23,30m, il possède une focale de 22,15m. Le feu antérieur est situé dans le port, à l'ouest de l'angle sud-ouest du bassin intérieur. La tourelle cylindrique est en maçonnerie sur soubassement. D'une taille de 14,10m au-dessus de la mer, il possède une portée de 12 milles.

History
Since the construction of the tower of the Lanterne in the 15th century, La Rochelle had only one beacon placed near this tower and signalling the rocks of Lavardin and Chauveau. At the request of the port pilots, a project concerning the construction of two new lights at the head of the jetty is mentioned from 1842 onwards. The first plans are drawn in 1848. Work takes place from 1850 to 1853. Two alignment lighthouses at 59° are constructed. The rear lighthouse, on Quai Valin, houses its lighting in an octagonal tower painted white with upper part in green, attached to the west face of a masonry house with two levels.
