History
This Benedictine abbey was one of the most important in Aquitaine. The primitive church, built in the time of the saint founder, was consecrated around 560. It is rebuilt in the 11th century, after having been burned by the Normans. The abbey is nothing but ruins following English invasions, and work is undertaken in the 15th century. The Protestants finish destroying it. It is sold as national property during the Revolution. Of the medieval abbey there remain buildings from the 13th, 15th, 16th, 17th and 18th centuries (vaulted cellars, main dwelling, vaulted passage, monumental portal, vestiges of the infirmary and of the cloister).
