Historique
Jarnac a été très tôt un des foyers calvinistes de l'Angoumois. Après un premier temple installé dans une grange voisine du château et supprimé à la fin du 17e siècle, un second temple est édifié en 1761. Cet édifice fit l'objet de travaux d'agrandissement et de réaménagement au 19e siècle : à partir de 1820, agrandissement et rehaussement du temple sur les plans de François-Nicolas Pineau et sous le contrôle de Paul Abadie père, architecte du département depuis 1818 (ces travaux permettent l'accès au temple depuis la rue) ; à partir de 1862, devis établis pour des réparations et des aménagements intérieurs, mais les travaux ne sont réalisés qu'à partir de 1888. Le temple, de plan rectangulaire très allongé, comporte deux parties distinctes : l'ancienne maison d'oraison de 1761 et l'extension de Pineau et Abadie, possédant une façade néo-classique exprimant la sobriété de l'église réformée.

History
Jarnac was early on one of the Calvinist centres of Angoumois. After a first temple installed in a barn neighbouring the château and suppressed at the end of the 17th century, a second temple was built in 1761. This building underwent works of enlargement and alteration in the 19th century: from 1820, enlargement and heightening of the temple on the plans of François-Nicolas Pineau and under the control of Paul Abadie senior, architect of the department since 1818 (these works permit access to the temple from the street); from 1862, estimates established for repairs and interior arrangements, but the works were carried out only from 1888 onwards. The temple, of a very elongated rectangular plan, comprises two distinct parts: the former prayer house of 1761 and the extension by Pineau and Abadie, possessing a neo-classical façade expressing the sobriety of the reformed church.
