Le château de Vals, situé au fond de la vallée de L'Etze est implanté sur un espace formant terrasse. Datant vraisemblablement du 15ème siècle, la demeure est composée, à ce jour, d'un corps principal de forme quadrangulaire avec, accolée contre la façade sud, une tour ronde d'escalier s'achevant au sommet par un chemin de ronde couvert sur mâchicoulis. Un bâtiment abritant des communs se dresse à l'Est, uni au corps principal par l'arc cintré d'un portail d'entrée. L'ensemble des constructions de ce château est caractéristique des demeures cantaliennes fortifiées par l'utilisation de moëllons volcaniques et ces bâtis couverts en lauzes. Au 17ème siècle, les bâtiments, fortement dégradés au cours des guerres de religion, furent remaniés par Jean Dubois qui opéra une complète réfection de la chapelle et décora la salle voûtée du 1er étage de peintures murales évoquant des motifs floraux ainsi que des scènes figurées. Le château fut racheté dans la première moitié du 19ème siècle par le géologue J.B Rames qui apporta à son tour de nouveaux aménagements à l'édifice abîmé par sa transformation en ferme.

History
The château de Vals, situated at the bottom of the valley of L'Etze is laid out on a space forming a terrace. Probably dating from the 15th century, the residence consists, to this day, of a main body of quadrangular form with, adjoining against the south facade, a round staircase tower terminating at the top with a covered covered passage on machicolations. A building housing outbuildings stands to the East, united to the main body by the round arch of an entrance gateway. The whole of the constructions of this castle is characteristic of the fortified residences of Cantal through the use of volcanic rubble stone and these buildings roofed in slate. In the 17th century, the buildings, heavily damaged during the Wars of Religion, were altered by Jean Dubois who carried out a complete refection of the chapel and decorated the vaulted room on the 1st floor with mural paintings evoking floral motifs as well as figured scenes. The castle was repurchased in the first half of the 19th century by geologist J.B Rames who in turn brought new arrangements to the building damaged by its transformation into a farm.
