Héritiers des premières communautés chrétiennes d'Orient, les Melkites sont des catholiques arabophones de rite grec. Leur arrivée à Marseille est liée à la campagne d'Egypte. History
Heirs to the earliest Christian communities of the Orient, the Melkites are Arabic-speaking Catholics of the Greek rite. Their arrival in Marseille is linked to the Egyptian campaign. Persecuted in the Ottoman empire, many Melkites rallied to Bonaparte and were repatriated with the French expeditionary force. A Greek Catholic rite church was authorized in Marseille in 1821.
