L'actuel théâtre a été construit en 1933 à l'emplacement de l'ancien théâtre, lui-même installé en 1797 dans l'ancienne église du couvent des Jacobins. En 1874, le propriétaire, M. Courtejaire, en fait don à la ville qui procède à son agrandissement et à son réaménagement. Mais le théâtre se révèle inadapté à l'accroissement du public et aux normes de sécurité. En 1930, la décision est prise de reconstruire le théâtre sur le même emplacement. Le projet est confié aux architectes Raymond Esparseil et Marcel Oudin qui proposent un immeuble résolument moderne, sobre et fonctionnel, caractéristique de l'entre deux guerres. Le chantier dure de 1933 à 1935 ; les décors peints sont réalisés par J. Noël Garrigues et G.L. Jaulmes. History
The present theatre was built in 1933 on the site of the old theatre, itself installed in 1797 in the former church of the Jacobins convent. In 1874, the owner, M. Courtejaire, donated it to the town which proceeded with its enlargement and remodelling. But the theatre proved inadequate for the growing public and safety standards. In 1930, the decision was taken to rebuild the theatre on the same site. The project was entrusted to architects Raymond Esparseil and Marcel Oudin who proposed a resolutely modern building, sober and functional, characteristic of the interwar period. The construction lasted from 1933 to 1935; the painted decors were executed by J. Noël Garrigues and G.L. Jaulmes. The theatre occupies the corner formed by two streets; it is a compact-plan building; the interior has retained its original arrangements unchanged: entrance hall, first-floor salon, painted decors, floors, stair rails, Italian-style auditorium.
