This road bridge over the Allier was built by Eugène Freyssinet for the account of the General Council of the Allier, in collaboration with the engineer Mercier, jointly with the bridges of the Veurdre and Châtel-de-Neuvre, of the same model. Before the construction of these bridges, Freyssinet carried out a test arch at Moulins. Built in 1912-1913 after the Veurdre bridge, the Boutiron bridge was subjected to a flood in 1913 and, strengthened, withstood another larger one the following month. It remains in service.

The technique proposed by Freyssinet is, as experimented at the Prairial bridge, that of the use of lightly reinforced concrete working mainly in compression, with articulation between two half vaults which merge towards the crown with the deck. Here he also puts into practice his invention of the uncentering of arches by jacking at the crown. The spandrels are made up of V-shaped reinforcements which participate in supporting the deck. The bridge comprises three arches in flat pointed arch resting on two piers and two abutments. Like the spandrels, the parapet of the deck is pierced in a V pattern.
