History

The château de la Viveyre, an isolated seigneurial residence of medieval structure dating from the 15th century, was originally composed of an enclosure surrounded by water-filled moats and protected on the flanks by four circular towers, of which only two remain visible, equipped with gun emplacements typical of the period of the Wars of Religion. The château courtyard was preceded by a square porch tower, subsequently altered into a dovecot and accessible from a drawbridge, now replaced by a stone bridge. A western wing and a northern return wing contain the dwellings inside which elements from the medieval period, including several monumental fireplaces (western wing) are preserved, as are also decorations from the modifications carried out in the 17th century (panelled room of full height in the northern dwelling) and 18th centuries, notably numerous fireplaced rooms finely sculpted with original decorations in both of the two wings alike.
