Historique
Première phase de travaux du 11e au 12e siècle au cours de laquelle est édifié l'ensemble du prieuré autour de la première église (nef unique sous-divisée en trois nefs et voûtée). Au 12e siècle, la nef est élargie par l'adjonction de deux bas-côtés. Choeur avec trois chapelles d'axe contiguës. Deuxième campagne de travaux au 15e siècle, à l'initiative de Dom Chollet : reconstruction intégrale du prieuré. Début du chantier en 1432. L'ensemble de style gothique se superpose à l'église romane. Présence des Mauristes de 1629 à 1644. Travaux aux 17e (déplacement de l'entrée, nouveaux dortoirs...) et 18e siècles (reconstruction d'une partie des bâtiments claustraux). Avec la Révolution, le prieuré est vendu comme bien national. Les Bénédictins reviennent à Souvigny entre 1875 et 1905, puis à partir de 1990 la communauté de Saint-Jean.

History
First phase of construction from the 11th to the 12th century during which the entire priory was built around the first church (single nave subdivided into three naves and vaulted). In the 12th century, the nave was enlarged by the addition of two aisles. Choir with three contiguous axial chapels. Second campaign of construction in the 15th century, at the initiative of Dom Chollet: complete reconstruction of the priory. Work began in 1432. The entire Gothic-style ensemble was superimposed on the Romanesque church. Presence of the Maurists from 1629 to 1644. Work in the 17th century (relocation of the entrance, new dormitories...) and 18th century (reconstruction of part of the claustral buildings). With the Revolution, the priory was sold as national property. The Benedictines returned to Souvigny between 1875 and 1905, then from 1990 onwards the community of Saint-Jean.
