Historique

History
Former fortified house whose construction probably dates to the 16th century on the site of an older structure whose existence is known from the 14th century. The building was heavily altered in the 17th century. Three wings in horseshoe formation surround the inner courtyard. The castle is surrounded on all four sides by a moat, and was protected by an outer enclosure wall of which only vestiges remain. Apart from the staircase turret, the facades were reopened in the 17th and 18th centuries. Inside, there is a spiral staircase from the late 15th or early 16th century and a chapel. On the top floor, a square-plan dovecote with corbels and moulded consoles. The north-west facade is almost entirely from the 15th century. La Matray was linked to the sanctuary of Souvigny as testified by a local legend according to which saint Odilon, abbot of Cluny, having planted his staff in this place, it took root. From it grew an elm tree long venerated, later replaced by a calvary.
