Historique

History
Former medieval fortress from the end of the 12th century, remodelled in the 16th century. A castle was built by Guillaume de Pézénas in the early 13th century. The old castle presents a main dwelling body with three storeys above a vaulted ground floor. Round towers at the north and north-west angles. To the south-east, a rectangular body might be a surviving part of an earlier dwelling. Square tower of the spiral staircase set against the middle of the south façade. In front, a courtyard enclosed to the east and south by a curtain wall. Crenellations and corbels from a disappeared wall-walk, established later than the primitive portals to the east, beneath a twin opening with cushioned bases. Large south portal decorated with ironwork. South and south-east angles reinforced by a round tower. Murder-holes at the base of the towers. Entire building constructed in small and medium coursed basalt. To the south and south-west, distinct from the castle, a complex of old buildings with chapel, spiral staircase tower, forge and dovecote.
