Historique

History
The decision, taken in 1860, to create a large arms manufacturing complex at Bourges, bringing together a foundry intended to replace the three "royal" foundries of Strasbourg, Toulouse and Douai, the pyrotechnics school of Metz and an arsenal of construction, was born from the desire to modernise foundries which had become obsolete and the concern to distance foundries and arsenals from the borders. The foundry was built from 1862 to 1866. Part of the land was intended for administration and officers' housing; the other, isolated from the first, comprised the foundry and occupied the rear space. The buildings which composed it were arranged according to a symmetrical plan. A certain number of original constructions survive: residential and administrative buildings, workshops and warehouses. Built in cut stone work, in a neo-classical style, these constructions are characteristic of the Second Empire. Their elevations, which use a repetitive system of standardised openings, respect rigorous symmetry.
