History

The chapel-Bâton was dependent on the archpresbytery of Gençay and its first mentions date from the late 14th century. The church seems to have been built fairly quickly, during the course of the 15th century. It presents a nave of four bays, buttressed by heavy buttresses. The western façade is entirely blind, as was initially the north wall, pierced with two openings in the 19th century. The south wall is pierced by a round-arch portal, with flamboyant mouldings and surmounted by an archivolt with scrolls and vegetative fleurons. This wall is also pierced by bays with trilobed tracery, as is the east wall of the flat chevet. Inside, each bay is surmounted by a quadripartite rib vault whose ribs descend onto engaged columns. The wall paintings are hidden under a distemper applied in 1865. A description made in the 19th century allows us to know that the scenes, executed in the 15th or 16th century, relate to Saint Magdalene, Saint Michael and Saint Peter.
