Extrêmement florissante au Moyen-âge, dévastée au cours des guerres de Religion, diminuée aux 16e et 17e siècles, l'abbaye bénédictine de Charroux fut vendue comme bien national pendant la Révolution. De l'église restait alors le choeur circulaire surmonté d'une tour octogonale, trois nefs, l'étage inférieur de la façade précédée d'un porche percé de trois portes et dominé par une tour carrée. Par la suite, ces restes furent utilisés dans de nouvelles constructions. Il restait également certaines parties des bâtiments abbatiaux.

History
Extremely prosperous in the Middle Ages, devastated during the Wars of Religion, diminished in the 16th and 17th centuries, the Benedictine abbey of Charroux was sold as national property during the Revolution. Of the church there remained then the circular chevet surmounted by an octagonal tower, three naves, the lower storey of the façade preceded by a porch pierced by three doors and dominated by a square tower. Subsequently, these remains were used in new constructions. Certain parts of the monastic buildings also remained.
