Le fort appartient au dispositif destiné à la défense de l'embouchure de la Charente et de l'arsenal de Rochefort. Construction commencée en 1810, achevée en 1834 ; sert de lieu de détention en 1854 (prisonniers russes) et en 1871 (communards). Restauration et modifications à la fin du 19e siècle (1878-1880 et 1889). Le nouveau fort est prévu comme réduit d'un vaste camp retranché. Le plan est celui d'un fort carré à quatre bastions. Il est protégé par une enveloppe de terre de 380 mètres de côté et correspond à la redoute bastionnée et carrée modèle A.

History
The fort belongs to the system designed for the defence of the mouth of the Charente and the arsenal of Rochefort. Construction begun in 1810, completed in 1834; served as a place of detention in 1854 (Russian prisoners) and in 1871 (Communards). Restoration and modifications at the end of the 19th century (1878-1880 and 1889). The new fort is planned as a redoubt of a vast fortified camp. The plan is that of a square fort with four bastions. It is protected by an earth envelope of 380 metres per side and corresponds to the model A bastioned and square redoubt.
