Colbert chargea Vauban de fortifier l'île d'Aix afin d'assurer la défense du port de Rochefort. Les travaux commencèrent en 1681. Cette batterie de forme rectangulaire comporte une entrée sur sa face sud. Deux bretèches sont situées sur chacune de ses façades que couronnent des meurtrières. Un pont-levis donnait accès à la batterie. Intérieur voûté en pierre.

History
Colbert entrusted Vauban with fortifying the island of Aix in order to ensure the defence of the port of Rochefort. Works began in 1681. This battery of rectangular form has an entrance on its south face. Two bretèches are situated on each of its facades which are crowned with loopholes. A drawbridge gave access to the battery. Interior vaulted in stone.
