Une atalaye était une tour de guêt avec cheminée destinée à repérer les baleines qui hantaient le golfe de Gascogne. Un guetteur signalait aux pêcheurs leur présence par une émission de fumée. L'atalaye de Guéthary est la dernière qui subsiste englobée dans une construction contemporaine. Elle se présentait en plan comme un rectangle allongé, terminé par un demi-cercle. L'escalier était flanqué de deux murs latéraux plus hauts que celui-ci. Une cloche était fixée à mi-hauteur de la tour. Elle a été tranformée en feu d'alignement dans les années 1950. Dans les années 1960, peut-être en 1966, l'atalaye a été englobée dans une maçonnerie qui l'a totalement convertie en feu.

History
An atalaye was a watchtower with a chimney intended to spot whales that haunted the Gulf of Gascony. A lookout signalled their presence to fishermen by emission of smoke. The atalaye of Guéthary is the last one that survives incorporated into a contemporary building. It presented itself in plan as an elongated rectangle, terminated by a semi-circle. The staircase was flanked by two lateral walls higher than the latter. A bell was fixed at mid-height of the tower. It was transformed into a leading light in the 1950s. In the 1960s, perhaps in 1966, the atalaye was incorporated into a masonry which completely converted it into a light.
