Le dossier de protection de 1909 éclaire sur l'histoire de cet édifice : "Le portail de l'ancienne église abbatiale, qui a été retiré de la caserne Martin des Pallières en 1892 et réédifié par les soins de la municipalité (à qui le génie civil l'a cédé) dans le jardin public. Ce portail avait été bouché et caché par un placage de maçonnerie en 1793, époque où la mairie prît possession de l'ancienne abbaye et la transforma en un hôpital qui a subsisté jusqu'en 1870. Vers 1892, le Génie militaire ayant entrepris d'aménager le rez de chaussée de l'ex-église en remise à voitures, fit pratiquer une large ouverture dans le mur occidental de cette construction. Ce travail fit tomber le placage de 1793 et la vieille porte dont on ne soupçonnait plus l'existence fut ainsi mise à découvert. On la disposa ; on en remit les pierres à la ville. C'est alors que celle-ci fit rétablir cette construction dans le Jardin public. Elle date du commencement du XVIe siècle. " (Rapport de M. The protection file of 1909 sheds light on the history of this building: "The portal of the former abbey church, which was removed from the Martin des Pallières barracks in 1892 and rebuilt by the care of the municipality (to which the military engineers ceded it) in the public garden. This portal had been blocked and hidden by a layer of masonry in 1793, the period when the municipality took possession of the former abbey and transformed it into a hospital which lasted until 1870. Around 1892, the military engineers, having undertaken to arrange the ground floor of the former church as a vehicle shed, had a wide opening made in the western wall of this construction. This work caused the 1793 layer to fall away and the old door whose existence was no longer suspected was thus brought to light. It was arranged; its stones were returned to the town. It was then that the latter had this construction rebuilt in the Public Garden. It dates from the beginning of the 16th century." (Report by M.
