Medieval stronghold resulting from the succession of a motte and bailey and a fortified enclosure, of which only 10% of the surface has been explored. The origin of Condé probably dates back to the Norman invasions. The castle is the stake in power struggles between local authorities. Rebuilt in 1184, the castle is described as the most powerful of its time. It is included within the urban perimeter with a military function until the 17th century, the period when it is transformed into an arsenal and then into a military hospital. Part of the curtain wall and the towers are razed, but the keep remains standing. In the 20th century, a gendarmerie and a house are built at the presumed location of the keep. In the 1990s, the postern and the two towers are converted into social housing. Investigation has made it possible to highlight an original motte surrounded by a outer wall. The 12th-century castle is protected by significant fill during the construction of the 13th-century enclosure. Two chapels are superimposed: the primitive castle chapel and the 17th-century chapel. The enclosure from the second half of the 13th century consists of a curtain wall flanked by five corner towers and three intermediate ones with a twin-towered gatehouse interrupting the north curtain. This ensemble is a rare example of the new mode of defence of a stronghold, replacing the system of the motte and its keep, a unique example of the evolution of medieval military architecture.
