Historique
Le théâtre de Châtellerault, rare exemple d'architecture néoclassique dans la région, a été construit par l'architecte Renaudet et l'entrepreneur Delage en utilisant les murs et les voûtes de la charpente en bois de l'ancienne chapelle des Minimes qui, dévastée par les guerres de Religion, avait été reconstruite en 1606 grâce à Henri IV. Le bâtiment est agrandi sous la Monarchie de Juillet par un pavillon cubique qui en forme l'avant-corps. La façade à deux niveaux est percée de six grandes baies cintrées séparées au premier étage par des colonnes cannelées surmontées de chapiteaux ioniques. A l'extérieur, deux piliers encadrent une niche dans laquelle étaient placées les statues en terre cuite représentant Melpomène et Thalie. Dans la partie inférieure, des tables sont ornées des masques de la Tragédie et de la Comédie. L'intérieur du bâtiment faisait une bonne part à la réception, la totalité de la salle de la Redoute formait l'avant-corps qui lui était consacré. La salle de spectacle comprend 600 places et est tracée en trois quart de cercle. La décoration est très riche : base des colonnes, chapiteaux, balcons, cadre de scène dorés à l'or fin, rideau et plafond peints par E. Vernon en 1898 lors de la restauration de la salle, bas-relief d'Espélosin.

History
The theatre of Châtellerault, rare example of neoclassical architecture in the region, was built by architect Renaudet and contractor Delage using the walls and vaults of the timber roof structure of the former chapel of the Minimes which, devastated by the Wars of Religion, had been rebuilt in 1606 thanks to Henri IV. The building is enlarged under the July Monarchy by a cubic pavilion which forms its front projection. The two-storey façade is pierced by six large round-arched openings separated on the first storey by fluted columns surmounted by Ionic capitals. On the exterior, two pillars frame a niche in which were placed terracotta statues representing Melpomène and Thalie. In the lower part, tablets are ornamented with masks of Tragedy and Comedy. The interior of the building made a large part for reception, the whole of the Redoute hall formed the front projection which was devoted to it. The auditorium comprises 600 seats and is laid out in three-quarter circle. The decoration is very rich: base of columns, capitals, balconies, stage frame gilded with fine gold, curtain and ceiling painted by E. Vernon in 1898 during the restoration of the hall, bas-relief by Espélosin.
