En 1597, la mère de René Descartes décède. Ce dernier est confié à sa grand-mère paternelle et élevé dans cette maison jusqu'à son départ pour le collège des Jésuites de La Flèche, en 1606. Il revient dans cette maison durant ses vacances du collège ou de l'école de droit de Poitiers, ainsi qu'à diverses périodes de sa vie. A la mort de son père, René Descartes hérite de cette maison qu'il vend ensuite à son frère. La maison est bâtie en pierre de tuffeau. History
In 1597, René Descartes's mother dies. He is entrusted to his paternal grandmother and raised in this house until his departure for the Jesuit college of La Flèche in 1606. He returns to this house during his college holidays or from the law school of Poitiers, as well as at various periods of his life. At the death of his father, René Descartes inherits this house which he subsequently sells to his brother. The house is built of tuffeau stone. The entrance consists of a small porch with a groin vault, giving access into the house by way of a courtyard containing a well. The stone staircase, adjoining the porch, gives access to the upper floors.
