Historique
Au cours du 13e ou début 14e siècle, les Dominicains s'implantent à Saintes, dans le quartier des halles. De la chapelle datant pour l'essentiel du 15e siècle, il ne reste que la partie orientale, la nef ayant été démolie par l'hôtel Martineau. L'élévation sud comprend une baie gothique et un portail de 1762. La grande verrière au remplage flamboyant date de 1446. En 1883 puis 1914, Monsieur Martineau, négociant en eau-de-vie, devient propriétaire de l'ensemble du quadrilatère bâti dans l'enclos de l'ancien couvent. La maison d'habitation est essentiellement du 19e siècle. De par ses relations avec les milieux artistiques, il put s'adresser à des faïenciers et maîtres verriers connus. L'ensemble exprime le goût éclectique propre au 19e siècle finissant (néo-renaissance, néo-Louis XV...). ainsi que le goût pour les formes différentes utilisées par l'Art Nouveau.

History
During the 13th or early 14th century, the Dominicans established themselves in Saintes, in the market quarter. Of the chapel dating essentially from the 15th century, only the eastern part remains, the nave having been demolished by the Martineau hotel. The south elevation comprises a Gothic opening and a portal of 1762. The large window with flamboyant tracery dates from 1446. In 1883 and then 1914, Monsieur Martineau, a brandy merchant, became owner of the entire quadrilateral building constructed within the enclosure of the former convent. The dwelling house is essentially from the 19th century. Through his connections with artistic circles, he was able to call upon well-known faience makers and master glaziers. The ensemble expresses the eclectic taste characteristic of the late 19th century (neo-Renaissance, neo-Louis XV...) as well as the taste for different forms used by Art Nouveau.
