Historique

History
Colbert chose Rochefort to found an arsenal there intended to arm the boats built in Brest, because of its privileged geographical situation. Indeed, protected by the forts of the neighbouring islands and sheltered inland, it met exactly the safety constraints required by such an establishment. The ambitious project provided for all the buildings necessary for the construction, rigging and arming of a ship, from the stores of raw materials, the rope-walk, the forge, the cannon foundry, the mast pit, the careening dock, the provisions stores up to the housing of personnel. The first workshop put into service in 1670 is the rope-walk, built to the plans of the architect François Blondel; it is intended for the making of cables and sails cloth from hemp. The conception of this building, whilst being functional, responds perfectly to classical aesthetics. Its construction is a challenge because of marshy subsoil which requires it to be founded on a raft of oak beams. Its exceptional length of 370 m, with no internal walls, is adapted to the manufacture of ropes of 195 m long. Abandoned after the fire which devastated it in 1944, it is restored in order to accommodate several public services.
