Historique

History
In the 14th century, the seigniory passed from the counts of Angoulême to the Sainte-Maure de Montaussier, lords of Jonzac, an important family of Touraine origin established in the 14th century in Saintonge and which remained proprietor of the castle under the Old Regime. The latter still contained, in the 19th century, Gothic elements. Around 1630, François de Jussac had it transformed by a Saintonge architect. In the following century, the last holder of Sainte-Maure makes various embellishments including the planting of a cork oak wood. Various modifications were also made in the 19th century. The 17th-century building presents an interior court and four circular flanking towers with battered bases. The entrance into the court is via a postern. At the centre of the north façade, a square tower above the entrance porch. To the south, a gallery with large arcades.
