Historique
La tradition fait remonter l'origine de la forteresse à Charlemagne. Jusqu'au 12e siècle, le château-fort eut des seigneurs particuliers. Avec Henri III, la forteresse passe sous la domination de Cognac et l'occupation anglaise se maintient jusqu'en 1380. La forteresse est alors prise par le maréchal de Sancerre et vraisemblablement démantelée. Elevée à l'extrémité d'une pointe rocheuse, elle est séparée du reste du plateau par un large fossé. Des contreforts de maçonnerie soutenaient l'ensemble. Des tours rondes s'avançaient dans les douves. L'emplacement du donjon n'est pas connu.

History
Tradition traces the origin of the fortress to Charlemagne. Until the 12th century, the castle-fort had particular lords. Under Henri III, the fortress passes under the domination of Cognac and English occupation is maintained until 1380. The fortress is then taken by the Marshal of Sancerre and presumably dismantled. Raised at the extremity of a rocky promontory, it is separated from the rest of the plateau by a large ditch. Masonry buttresses supported the whole. Round towers projected into the moats.
