Historique
Le bâtiment auquel appartient cette porte était l'ancien hôtel de ville de Cognac pendant la majeure partie du 18e siècle. Il est situé dans la rue qui était alors, d'après la tradition, celle des familles les plus fortunées de la ville. Cette ancienne porte du 17e siècle présente deux ressauts en saillie du mur. Deux pilastres cannelés très plats, doublés chacun d'un second, tous deux avec chapiteau ionique, encadrent un arc plein cintre mouluré, à la clef formée d'un claveau très saillant en forme de console ornée d'une palmette. Dans les écoinçons formés par l'arc et les pilastres se trouvent des feuillages. La partie supérieure formant les pilastres présente une frise ornée de deux entrelacs inégaux. Cet entablement supportait un fronton en saillie sur le mur aux extrémités duquel se trouvent des pots à feu doublés.

History
The building to which this door belonged was the former town hall of Cognac for the greater part of the 18th century. It is situated in the street which was then, according to tradition, that of the most wealthy families of the town. This old 17th-century door presents two projecting offsets from the wall. Two very flat fluted pilasters, each doubled by a second, both with Ionic capital, frame a moulded round arch, with the keystone formed by a very projecting voussoir in the form of a console decorated with a palmette. In the spandrels formed by the arch and the pilasters are found foliage. The upper part forming the pilasters presents a frieze decorated with two unequal interlaces. This entablature supported a pediment projecting from the wall at the ends of which are found doubled finial urns.
