Fondation au 11e siècle. Eglise rebâtie de 1247 à 1286. Travaux défensifs à la fin du 14e siècle. Abbaye incendiée par les Anglo-Saxons en 1434. Reconstruction dans la seconde moitié du 15e siècle. Abbaye pillée par les Protestants entre 1564 et 1569. Réforme mauriste introduite en 1666 après un abandon de l'abbaye de près d'un siècle : réhabilitation et restauration jusqu'en 1746 (bâtiment conventuel, salle des hôtes, ...). Abbaye vendue comme bien national à la Révolution. Destruction du cloître gothique en 1820. Importants travaux de restauration de l'église et des bâtiments abbatiaux pendant les 19e et 20e siècles.
